hawthorne berry herb

Hawthorn Berry Benefits

Used to promote the health of the circulatory system, treat angina, high blood pressure, congestive heart failure and cardiac arrhythmia and has been found to strengthen the heart. Hawthorn is widely regarded in Europe as a safe and effective treatment for the early stages of heart disease and has been used for a number of ailments including angina, myocarditis, arteriosclerosis, nervous conditions like insomnia, and diarrhea. It has also been indicated for strengthening blood vessels, vascular insufficiency and blood clots, restoring the heart muscle wall, lowering cholesterol and to aid digestion.

Hawthorn is widely regarded in Europe as a safe and effective treatment for the early stages of heart disease and is endorsed by Commission E- the branch of the German government that studies and approves herbal treatments. It is used to promote the health of the circulatory system and has been found useful in treating angina, high blood pressure, congestive heart failure and cardiac arrhythmia. It has been found to strengthen the heart and stabalise it against arrythmias.

There is also evidence for cardiovascular system improvement, particularly in clinical parameters associated with angina, congestive heart failure and acute myocardial infarct. This may be due to the herb's antioxidant activity. Its use in the treatment of hepatitis in modern Chinese medicine is supported by the demonstration of hepatoprotective activity in animal studies.

Animal and laboratory studies have found that hawthorn contains active compounds with antioxidant properties. Antioxidants are substances that scavenge free radicals; damaging compounds in the body that alter cell membranes, tamper with DNA, and even cause cell death. Free radicals occur naturally in the body, but environmental toxins (including ultraviolet light, radiation, cigarette smoking, and air pollution) can also increase their number.

Free radicals are believed to contribute to the ageing process as well as the development of a number of health problems including heart disease. Antioxidants found in hawthorn can neutralise free radicals and may reduce or even help prevent some of the damage they cause.

Congestive heart failure

Hawthorn has primarily been studied in people with congestive heart failure (a health condition in which the heart is unable to pump adequate amounts of blood to other organs in the body). Of six well-designed trials, four studies concluded that hawthorn significantly improved heart function and three found that the herb improved patients' ability to exercise. Patients in five of the six studies reported that hawthorn significantly improved symptoms of the disease (such as shortness of breath and fatigue). One study found that hawthorn extract (900 mg/day) taken for 2 months was as effective as low doses of captropril (a leading heart medication) in improving symptoms of congestive heart failure. A large-scale international study is currently underway to determine whether hawthorn extract reduces the risk of death in people with this disease. Results are expected at the end of 2002.

Atherosclerosis

Animal and laboratory studies demonstrate that this herb has antioxidant properties that help protect against the formation of plaques, which leads to a health problem known as atherosclerosis. Plaque buildup in the vessels that supply the heart with oxygen-rich blood may cause chest pain (angina) and heart attacks while plaque buildup in the arteries that supply blood to the brain may result in stroke.

Chest pain

Hawthorn berry preparations have been shown to combat chest pain (angina), a health problem caused by insufficient blood flow to the heart. In one early study, 60 angina patients were given either 180 mg/day of hawthorn berry-leaf-flower extract or placebo for 3 weeks. Those who received the hawthorn preparation experienced improved blood flow to the heart and were also able to exercise for longer periods of time without suffering from chest pain.

High cholesterol

Studies using rats suggest that a hawthorn tincture (made from the berries) may be a powerful agent for the removal of LDL ("bad") cholesterol from the bloodstream. The tincture of hawthorn berries also reduced the production of cholesterol in the liver of rats who were being fed a high-cholesterol diet. Studies to determine if hawthorn will confer the same effects in people are needed.

High blood pressure

Although hawthorn has not been studied specifically in people with high blood pressure, considerable evidence supports the cardiovascular benefits of this herb. Studies suggest that hawthorn can be taken safely by people with hypertension who are also taking blood pressure medications.

Slippery Elm Bark

Slippery Elm Bark can be found in the bulk herbs section in your local health food store (or online). individuals and Celiacs, have irritated digestive tracks,

Slippery Elm Bark, or ulmus fulva, is an herb from the inner part of the elm bark which is usually sold in a finely ground powder. It hails from the elm tree and masquerades under many names: American elm, Indian elm, red elm, moose elm, sweet elm, rock elm, and winged elm.

It is a very safe and gentle herb and is allergen free (unless you are allergic to elm trees). Slippery Elm Bark herb can be taken by anyone; infants, pregnant women, and the elderly can all enjoy its benefits. The inner bark, normally ground into a powder, is used for a variety of medicinal purposes. The soothing properties of the bark benefit both the skin as well as the respiratory and digestive track.

General Health Benefits and Nutrients:

Slippery Elm Bark can actually sustain life for a short period of time since it is high in many essential nutrients:
sodium, potassium, calcium, iron, selenium, iodine, copper, zinc, phosphorus, bromine, manganese, and vitamins E, F, K, and P
It is excellent for those who are sick or have cancer or other destructive "wasting" diseases.
Medicinal Uses (internal):
Digestive Problems:
indigestion
cramps
ulcers
colitis, gastritis, GI hyperacidity,
kidney problems
diarrhea and constipation
wasting diseases
cancer
It soothes nausea and is not likely to be thrown up
To take internally: Make an easy tea! See my recipe at the end. I adjust the slippery elm amount and spices to taste each time.

Another great herbal recipe is from Dr. Smith who gives the following: Take equal parts of slippery elm, marshmallow root (both of these herbs soothe and buffer the stomach and GI tract), comfrey (improves digestion), echinacea (fights off infection), and cayenne capsules (acts as a stimulant and magnifies healing properties of the herbs). Many people use honey, cinnamon, cloves, and ginger to naturally flavor herbal remedies.

Medicinal Uses (External):
The soothing and inflammation-reducing properties of the bark make it ideal for:

burns
rash (diaper rash)
sores, wounds
hemorrhoids and boils
To apply externally: Mix slippery elm in some water to make a thick paste and apply it directly on the affected area.

Heal an Irritated or Acidic, Damaged G.I. Tract:

Take as a hot tea or add to your baked goods, soups, smoothies, or really anything to take for an irritated digestive system.

The bark has been shown to neutralize acidity and protect mucous membranes along the GI tract by coating the membrane surface. This "buffering" of the membranes helps the irritated area (stomach, intestines, throat) heal themselves while the acidic offending environment is isolated from the membrane. The coating action also soothes ulcers.

Heal a Sore Throat or Respiratory Infection:
The acid buffering and anti-inflammatory action of the bark soothes sore throats and relieves dry and irritated bronchi and lungs. It is an expectorant, meaning that it breaks up mucous stuck in the throat or bronchi (as is the case in bronchitis or a cold/flu) and causes you to cough it up. Conditions appropriate for slippery elm usage:

asthma
bronchitis
sore throats, coughing, hoarseness
tonsillitis
pleurisy, lung bleeding, and leukorrhea
To soothe a sore throat: Karl Smith, D. C., has a fantastic page on his University Chiropractic website. He has many easy herbal remedies and good looking recipes if you're adventurous. A favorite lozenge recipe of Dr. Smith's: Take some locally grown honey and mix it with slippery elm powder till it makes a thick paste. Add 1-5 drops of peppermint oil to taste. Put in a container with a lid and store it in the fridge. Eat by the spoonful 2-4 times daily until sore throat subsides.

Here is a easy slippery elm tea that really soothes your tummy and intestines. It really helps constipation and is very gentle. You do not get bloated from it, Since the powdered bark absorbs the hot water as it steeps, this tea is filling and prevents one from after meal fridge raids for which I'm famous (always hungry since my absorption is still fairly poor). This tea is allergen free and can be spiced up to your liking. If you can tolerate some light coconut milk, or almond milk (careful, Almond Breeze brand has soy lethicin), both are great in this tea. As I've mentioned before, I don't recommend soy milk since unfermented soy is damaging to your health.

~ 1 T. slippery elm bark (powder)
1 c. water, boiling
1 T. sweetener of choice**
2-3 oz. light coconut milk (optional) or other "milk" of choice

** I use organic unsulfured blackstrap molasses (optional) or 1 packet (1 g. total, 10 mg herb) Stevia

spices (adjust to your liking):
hearty dashes of:
cinnamon, nutmeg, caradmon (powdered)
dash of 50-50 cayenne pepper & cinnamon mixture
powdered ginger

Variations: Add 1 T. unsweetened cocoa powder (not Dutch process - it's processed with alkali)

Just boil the water, spoon in the elm powder, and add the spices to your liking. Stir in the molasses (or other sweetener) and "milk" beverage. Drink hot.

Essiac or 4 herb Tea

Essiac Tea Benefits Are Numerous--
Essiac Helps Build The Immune System and Purify the Body of Toxins

Essiac tea is a versatile herbal supplement with many benefits. Essiac tea benefits include a boost to the immune system and detoxification of the body. Essiac tea is used by people all over the world for many different health problems as well as for general health and well-being. Essiac tea benefits the entire body in a holistic fashion.

When the body is treated holistically, treatment occurs from the inside out. Because essiac tea addresses the i>root of the problem for many illnesses and diseases, long-term, permanent healing becomes possible. This is contrary to the action of most medicines, which simply mask symptoms. Many medicines are just a "band-aid" to cover up the symptom, but the underlying problem still exists. This is where the essiac tea benefits of full-body healing and detoxification really shine. Click here to read the list of health problems for which essiac may be of benefit: Health Problems and Essiac.

Essiac Tea Benefits: Primary Actions

Essiac tea's primary actions are to remove heavy metals, detoxify the body, restore energy levels, and rebuild the immune system. After this occurs, the body is restored to a level to where it is able to better defeat an illness or disease state using it's own resources.

Everyone comes in contact with viruses and bacteria all the time, and everyone is susceptible to developing health problems. People only get sick because their body's immune system FAILS to fight off the illness or infection. Therefore if the immune system is boosted, many illnesses and diseases can be irradicated WITH NO DRUGS. Essiac tea benefits the immune system more than any other substance we know of.

Here are some essiac tea benefits that have been reported to us and observed in research performed by Rene Caisse and Dr. Charles Brusch at the Brusch Medical Research Center.

Essiac Tea...

1. Prevents the buildup of excess fatty deposits in artery walls, heart, kidney and liver.

2. Regulates cholesterol levels by transforming sugar and fat into energy.

3. Destroys parasites in the digestive system and throughout the body.

4. Counteracts the effects of aluminum, lead and mercury poisoning.

5. Strengthens and improves the functioning of muscles, organs and tissues.

8. Promotes the absorption of fluids in the tissues.

9. Removes toxic accumulations in the fat, lymph, bone marrow, bladder, and alimentary canals.

10. Neutralizes acids, absorbs toxins in the bowel, and eliminates both.

11. Clears the respiratory channels by dissolving and expelling mucus.

12. Relieves the liver of its burden of detoxification by converting fatty toxins into water-soluble substances that can then be easily eliminated through the kidneys.

13. Assists the liver to produce lecithin, which forms part of the myelin sheath, a white fatty material that encloses nerve fibers.

14. Reduces, perhaps eliminates, heavy metal deposits in tissues (especially those surrounding the joints) to reduce inflammation and stiffness.

15. Improves the functions of the pancreas and spleen by increasing the effectiveness of insulin.

16. Purifies the blood.

17. Increases red cell production, and keeps them from rupturing.

18. Increases the body's ability to utilize oxygen by raising the oxygen level in the tissue cells.

19. Maintains the balance between potassium and sodium within the body so that the fluid inside and outside each cell is regulated; in this way, cells are nourished with nutrients and are also cleansed properly.

20. Converts calcium and potassium oxalates into a harmless form by making them solvent in the urine. Regulates the amount of oxalic acid delivered to the kidneys, thus reducing the risk of stone formation in the gall bladder, kidneys, or urinary tract.

21. Protects against toxins entering the brain.

22. Protects the body against radiation and X-rays.

23. Relieves pain.

24. Speeds up wound healing by regenerating the damaged area.

25. Increases the production of antibodies like lymphocytes and T-cells in the thymus gland, which is the defender of our immune system.

26. Protects the cells against free radicals.

27. Increases the appetite for healthful foods.

28. Decreases sugar cravings due to better blood sugar control.

29. Increases energy available.

30. Boosts mood and leads to an improved sense of well being.

Mullien Herb

Great mullein contains demulcent, emollient and astringent properties making it useful to help resolve pectoral complaints and bleeding of the lungs and bowels. Its uses can be traces back to the Greek herbalist, Dioscorides, who was one of the first to recommend it for in curing a variety of lung diseases.

The Herb Great Mullein
(Verbascum thapsus)
Various Native American tribes used great mullein to help cure chest diseases. One such example is by the Navajos who would mix it with tobacco and smoke it to relieve coughing spasms. The Mohicans, however, would mix it with molasses, making a tea and use it as a cough medicine.
Great mullein has a very long history as an herbal remedy and in the Middle Ages was regarded as a cure all. Its focus is that of curing cough and sore throats. Mullein contains antiseptic agents and is mostly used today for chest ailments including bronchitis, asthma, pneumonia, pleurisy and whooping cough.
Recommended uses include that as a general pain reliever. The oils destroy disease and germ infections. Insomnia has also been a noted ailment for which mullein can be taken to aid in. This is caused by the high content of mucilage and saponins.
Verbascum is an expectorant, meaning it is used to expel mucus from the lungs and throat; a demulcent, meaning it has soothing elements and reduces inflammation; a vulnerary, meaning it aids in the promotion of cell growth and repair; and an anodyne, which is a pain reliever.
Infusion of the oils of the mullein flower can be used to create drops to help earaches. This infusion is a very strong antibacterial agent and is also extremely effective in the treatment of mouth and gum ulcers. The root is commonly used to relieve pain from cramping, toothaches, and convulsions. Alternatively it can be used effectively as an herbal remedy for migraines when accompanied by ear oppression.
Poultices of the great mullein plant leaves have shown to help with hemorrhoid problems and said to be very valuable in the aid of diarrhea due to its combination of demulcent and astringent properties. This combination not only provides relief but is shown to strengthen bowels at the same time. It is these same properties that make mullein of great use for bleeding of the lungs and the bowels.
The entire mullein plant itself basically possesses sedative and narcotic properties.
Dosage and Administration:

The most commonly known way to effectively ingest mullein is by creating a simple tea from the leaf. This method is very effective as long as it is carefully strained through something of a very fine mesh to weed out the soft velvety hairs previously mentioned. The leaves may also be dried out, crushed, and then smoked to help relieve congestion due to hay fever or other respiratory distresses.

Potential Side Effects of Great Mullein

Mullein is mainly beneficial and contains the following active compounds: Mucilage, flavonoids, triterpenoid saponins, volatile oils and tannin. However, the seeds also contain rotenone and coumarin which are considered and named as dangerous by the FDA.

Diseases and Addiction

Disease and Addiction

Holistically speaking...

Anger stores in the liver. Regret stores in the pancreas. Fear stores in the kidneys.

Worry stores in the spleen. Sadness, sorrow, and grief store in the lungs and heart. This is why it is

very important to express yourself, to release your emotions. Failure to release your emotions

results in repressed emotional responses which is very injurous to the body. In many cases,

repressed

emotional responses are the result of conditioning or programming from early childhood. I often

remember my mother saying when people came over..children are to be seen..not heard. If this is

a repeated action over and over it is programmed into you and as a adult..you act this out!

Repressed emotional responses play a most pivotal role in addictions and Disease. Most addictions are a

subconscious maneuver to fill up a void, usually a spiritual void. Addictions are

subconsciously developed in order to escape from things, to blank out from things, to not face

things. Many people develop an alcohol problem due to a subconscious desire to numb anger and

other emotions such as hurt. A sense of failure in life, doing unethical things when you know

they are unethical, living up to certain expectations set by others, etc. also may lead to a

subconscious desire to numb the pain caused by failure and/or unethical actions. You can see

this in many judges, attorneys, law enforcement officers, business professionals, professional

athletes, and college students.

Many people start smoking in a subconscious attempt to numb various emotions. The menthol in

cigarettes calms the lungs and the nervous system. The greatest remedy for

addiction is living your life predicated upon truth. Truth is great for the spirit. Truth feeds

and strengthens the spirit. Many religious people also get addicted to substances. Why?

Because they don't live their lives predicated upon truth. It's one thing to talk Jesus, Bhudda

or Allah, and another thing to walk Jesus, Bhudda or Allah. Talking God won't get the job

done. You must live God in order to get the job done. Truth and walking God prevents spiritual

voids. They keep the heart overflowing with joy, happiness, peace, tranquility, courage, and

love.

Many people who feel God has abandoned them will also turn to substance abuse to numb the sense

of hurt, pain, apathy, and let down.

There are a plethora of potent and effective herbs that are great for the lungs and the

respiratory system. These herbs include pulmonary, expectorant and demulcent herbs and

include Mullein (leaf/flowers), Lobelia, Fenugreek, Coltsfoot, Boneset, Comfrey, Marshmallow

(Althea), Licorice, Pleurisy, Slippery Elm bark, White Pine Bark, Hyssop, Eucalyptus, Yerba

Santa, Elecampane, Ground Ivy, and Horehound.

We can talk about liver and kidney and all the other herbs in a few days!

Echinacea

Echinacea is a Native American medicinal herb found in the United States and the southern regions of Canada. Though there are nine known species of this plant, Echinacea purpurea is the most potent and commonly used form, according to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine. Talk with your medical provider about the benefits and potential side effects of echinacea before you begin treatment with this supplement.

BENEFITS

Echinacea is primarily used to alleviate symptoms associated with the common cold, such as nasal congestion and sore throat. Taking this herb at the onset of cold symptoms is also purported to shorten the duration of cold symptoms; however, clinical studies evaluating the effect of echinacea on cold symptoms are mixed, the University of Maryland Medical Center reports. Topical treatments containing echinacea may also aid in wound-healing. Additional health benefits associated with echinacea use include diminished pain, reduced inflammation and enhanced immune function. Echinacea may also impart antiviral or antioxidant effects on the body.

SIDE EFFECTS

Typically, side effects are not associated with echinacea supplementation. Mild side effects may include nausea or stomach discomfort, sore throat, headache, dizziness, body aches or fatigue. Orally-administered echnicea may cause temporary tingling or numbness along your tongue. Children in particular may be more likely to develop a skin rash as a side effect of echinacea treatment. People who are allergic to certain plants, such as marigolds, daisies, ragweed or chrysanthemums, may be at an increased risk of developing a severe allergic reaction upon exposure to echinacea, MayoClinic.com warns. Seek immediate care from your medical provider if you exhibit allergic reaction symptoms including wheezing, intense itching or facial swelling after taking a dose of this herbal supplement. In the absence of appropriate medical care, an allergic reaction to echinacea may be life-threatening.

MEDICATION INTERACTIONS

Always talk with your physician about all medications you are currently taking before beginning treatment with a dietary supplement -- including echinacea. If you are receiving immunosuppressant therapy due to cancer, organ transplantation or other medical issue, do not take echinacea, the UMMC warns. Concomitant use of echinacea and immunosuppressants may reduce the efficacy of this immune therapy.

CONTRAINDICATIONS

If you have any pre-existing health concerns, be sure to talk with your physician before taking echinacea. Though treatment with echinacea during pregnancy is not known to cause fetal development problems, do not take this herbal supplement if you are pregnant unless you are under the care of a doctor. If you have an autoimmune disease or connective tissue disorder or multiple sclerosis, HIV/AIDS, leukemia, diabetes, liver disease or tuberculosis, avoid taking echinacea unless otherwise instructed by a medical professional.

Listening

Listening: It's easy to get busy in life trying to do everything at once. You can listen and work at the same time but sometimes multi-tasking isn't the best use of our time. Sometimes we have to stop, look people in the eyes, and give them the gift of listening.

We need to take time to deposit value in their hearts. We need to support one another, and listening is an amazing way of doing just that.

As you go about your day, the angels remind you to give people the gift of listening. It seems like such a little thing, but those little deposits will eventually make a big difference. When you make deposits in people, you are making deposits in eternity, and that is what pleases the heart of God.

Angels Card

Surrender & Release

Surrender & Release: If we could see the miracle in letting go our whole life would change. Let go, allow God and the angels to help you.

When we willingly release and begin the process of healing from the unhappy situation, we may find we gain the necessary clarity that was not apparent to us before. In having gained clarity individuals often regain their own self determination and strength.

The angels ask you to try not to control the outcome of your troubling situation. It can take a lot of courage to let go and trust in the decision to do so but It may also be one of the most valuable decisions we can ever make. Let go, and let God help you!
